Exercise: Spider Diagrams

Brief

Create a spider diagram for each of these words:

Seaside Childhood Angry Festival

Try to remember your own experiences of these things even if you have only experienced them through TV, film or photos. Include a list of objects you associate with each word: list colours, use adjectives, textures and subjects.

In your learning log make a note of:

Which word was most difficult for you to work with

The strategies that suited you best to come up with more words

The word I found most difficult to work with was ‘festival‘. I think this was because I do not have much personal experience of festivals (apart from events like Christmas, birthdays, etc) and could therefore not relate well to the word and it’s connotations. For the words ‘childhood‘ and ‘seaside‘, I could draw on my personal observations as well as the ‘stereotypical’ words. I also found the word ‘angry‘ fairly hard to come up with associated words, which is due to it being a feeling and therefore more abstract than the others – it required a deep level of thought.

After I had used up my brain capacity thinking of my own words, I found Google Images and a dictionary/thesaurus very useful for stimulating further ideas.
